Registration of Rho(D) Negative Blood Donors

Abstract
We investigated 595 Rh(D) negative blood donors registered in the Korean Red Cross National Blood Center. Their frequencies of A, B, O, AB blood group are 34%(200), 28% (164), 26%(159) and 12%(72), respectively. The male/female ratio is
0.66(236/359).
The number of members at the age group between 16 and 64 is 543 (208 male, 335 female). And 438 of them suggested to be acceptable for blood donation when compared with donor rejection rate. Therefore, we think the problems of Rh(d) negative
blood
supply can be easily solved, if all local blood centers strictly manage the registration of Rh(D) negatives.
Rh phenotypes of 497 registered blood donors are categorized into 6 patterns. And the incidence is cde 282(57%), Ccde 112(23%), cdEe 52(10%), Cde 20(4%), cdE 18(4%) and CcdEe 13(3%), respectively.
We also studied the parent' Rh(D) type and the number of Rh(D) negative siblings in the registered donors through questionnaire method and 73 donors answered the questionnaire. Among them, 48(66%) donors' parents was both Rho(D) positive, 3(4%)
single
negative and 22(30%) unknown, and 2(2.7%) donors have 2 sibling with Rho (D) negative, 20(27.4%) have 1 sibling and 51 (69.9%) have no other sibling with Rho (D) negative beside him.
